Anna will speak about her time spent in the PeaceCorps serving in Senegal, Africa. She did not realize then the connections between water quality and health The issues surrounding the topic fascinated her and she began studying it from different perspectives (population pressures, environmental changes, land-use impacts, etc.).

With the large numbers of young birds moving south, some folks think that fall is the best time of the year due to the quantity of southbound migrants. Of course many of these travelers are in immature or fall plumage making for some identification challenges.

Most of think August is a month in which to stay indoors, but in the bird world, August is a month when many of our local birds decide to begin their southbound journey. Most of our Barn Swallows and Purple Martins are already gone, but, despite the summer heat, birds are slowly moving through our area.

May is often a beautiful month to go birding. Most of the northbound migrants have moved through, except for a few late Blackpoll Warblers. All of our summer-resident birds should be on territory and singing.

FREE Armchair Traveler with Haley Smith

Haley will speak about her semester abroad in the East African countries of Kenya and Tanzania. She spent three months in the Wildlife Management Studies program with the School for Field Studies learning about everything from native language and culture to human-wildlife conflict and ways to mitigate it.
