Family Concert - Sparkle City Brass

The Sparkle City Brass was formed in 2003 and performs regularly for public and private events around Upstate SC. The group includes active and retired music educators as well as dedicated music hobbyists. Members of the ensemble have performed with the Spartanburg Philharmonic, Spartanburg Little Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse band, Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble, and many other ensembles across the Upstate.

Band member Bios:
Ken Frick, Trumpet. - Ken is a long time member of the Spartanburg Philharmonic and has been a member of the Sparkle City Brass almost since the inception of the group. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Jamie Kirby, Trumpet - Jamie is a music educator and private trumpet teacher in Spartanburg. In addition to playing with the quintet, he has done many shows with the Spartanburg Little Theatre and plays regularly for several churches in the Spartanburg area. He is a graduate of USC and has a Masters in Music Ed. from Winthrop University.

Katie Smith, Horn - Katie is a graduate of Converse College and is the band director at Oakbrook Prep Academy in Spartanburg. She has performed many shows with the Spartanburg Little Theatre and has directed the annual musical at Oakbrook on several occasions.

Mike Miller, Trombone - Mike is a graduate of Furman University and has been an active musician in the Upstate for many years. He performs regularly with the Spartanburg Jazz Ensemble, Spartanburg Community Band, and Spartanburg Little Theatre. He has also performed with the Spartanburg Philharmonic and the house band at Flat Rock Playhouse.

Marshall Kirby, Tuba - Marshall is a graduate of Converse College and is a retired band director. He taught band at Jonesville, Boiling Springs, and Spartanburg High Schools in a career that lasted over 30 years. He has been with the quintet almost since the beginning. Marshall has also performed with the Spartanburg Philharmonic, the Brevard Community Band , and the Blue Ridge Brass Ensemble.
