Environmental Education

boardwalk class

Environmental education is a key element of our community service. FENCE offers a wide range of in-house and in-school programs for school children, as well as a regular schedule of workshops, lectures and activities for the whole family.

During the school year, some one thousand elementary and junior high school studentshappy kids join our natural history field trips around the FENCE grounds or to nearby locations. FENCE also provides facilities and classes in nature study for home-schooled children and for youth organizations like 4-H and the Boy and Girl Scouts.

Teachers not only bring their classes to FENCE, but FENCE travels to the classroom with our outreach Project FENCE. Schoolchildren in Polk and Spartanburg counties enjoy programs like "Schoolyard kids & turtle Scavenger Hunt" and "Insects and Creepy-Crawlies". Five summer day camps during June and July provide a wholesome and fun way to teach children respect for our natural heritage.
