Snakes are so misunderstood so please join local naturalist and snake expert, Steve O'Neil, for an entertaining afternoon showcasing many of our local WNC snakes. Steve will allay many of the myths and legends surrounding these very important reptiles.

Early Spring Wildflower Walk with Scott Dean
Join naturalist Scott Dean for an hour or two focusing on spring ephemeral wildflowers. We'll discuss how the flowers attract pollinators, why they grow in the forms they do, and general plant community ecology. We'll also have a good time discussing how the common names came into being, cultural and medicinal applications, and just enjoying the beauty of these wonderful plants.

Trees and Woody Plants Hike with Luke Cannon
Luke Cannon is one of those rare men who is an all-round naturalist. He is comfortable pointing out birds and identifying fall warblers; teaching folks how to grow organic vegetables and instructing people on what plants to safely eat out in our Western Carolina Woodlands. Luke will teach us how to identify them and even let us know any native-American uses they may have.

Salamander Talk with Tim Lee
Our next Nature program will feature Tim Lee and some of his Salamanders! Tim is an interpretative ranger at Caesar's Head State Park in SC and he will be at FENCE on Sunday, May 3 at 2PM. This will be a great program for the whole family.

Free Family Concert with New 5 Cents
This Sunday, at 4pm FENCE welcomes the local band New 5 Cents to the great room to perform a free, family concert. New 5 Cents plays a combination of old and new bluegrass songs, and a few barely bluegrass songs. They present a high energy show and have received positive response wherever they have performed. Be sure not to miss out on this great concert. Refreshments will be served after the performance. Thank you to the Kirby Endowment at the Polk County Community Foundation for making this event possible.

The Foothills Astronomical Society and FENCE invite you to star gaze, and learn about astronomy. These programs are set to begin at sunset. You are encouraged to stay as long as you’d like! "Seeing, Smelling and Hearing the United States on Two Wheels - Stories and photos from cross-country bike ride across the United States" Jack Henderson will speak about his 2000 plus mile bike ride from the coast of Virginia to Utah and Colorado’s border. Crossing through seven states, he will speak about his journey across the landscape. This presentation is made possible by the Kirby Endowment at the Polk County Community Foundation.

To describe Tom’s music is a bit like describing a favorite recipe---the first ingredient is tasteful acoustic guitar playing. Second, add Tom’s rich vocal style. Sprinkle in a dash of humor.
