Summer Bird Hike with Aaron Steed
Though August is a summer month, it is the start of the fall migration for many of our local birds. Many of our summer bird residents are still around at this time of year, perhaps still singing, while certain species such as Barn Swallow and Purple Martin have largely gone. The first of many southbound songbird migrants are just beginning to trickle through. Join international bird guide, Aaron Steed, for a walk through the woodlands around FENCE and search for a variety of warblers, tanagers, sparrows and more.

WORKSHOP ON CONTROLLING INVASIVE PLAN
Bittersweet, privet, kudzu and tree of heaven are all words you don't want to hear if you are a property owner in foothills of the Carolinas. A hands-on workshop teaching folks how to attack these noxious woody weeds. Plans include having the participants work on an overgrown space on the FENCE property. As strange as it may sound many non-native woody plant species can be effectively controlled when attacked while dormant. At the very least one does not have to contend with yellow jackets, hornets or snakes, when working before bud break in late winter. Retired horticulturist John Vining will be discussing how to identify the plants in winter and which plants are best suited for this dormant treatment.
